Zaheer Khan Appointed CSK Head Coach on MS Dhoni’s Recommendation
Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, replacing long-serving coach Stephen Fleming ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
According to the supplied report, Zaheer has signed a one-year contract, with the possibility of an extension. The appointment comes after Fleming ended his 18-year association with the franchise.
The biggest development behind the appointment is the role played by MS Dhoni. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said Dhoni suggested Zaheer’s name and that the franchise’s cricket management team agreed that he was the right fit for the position.
Dhoni has also been given a role in choosing Fleming’s successor. Despite the coaching change, CSK have confirmed that Dhoni remains available as a player for now.
Zaheer Khan Takes Over From Stephen Fleming
Stephen Fleming had been associated with Chennai Super Kings for 18 years, making him one of the longest-serving coaches in IPL history.
With Fleming stepping aside, CSK began searching for a replacement and, according to the report, wanted an Indian coach who would focus exclusively on the IPL.
Several candidates were considered before the franchise eventually settled on Zaheer Khan.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed the former India pacer to the franchise.
“We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings.”
She also highlighted Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and his experience in nurturing young players.
The franchise believes his experience can help strengthen CSK’s squad and provide direction as the team prepares for the next IPL campaign.
MS Dhoni Recommended Zaheer Khan
The involvement of MS Dhoni has become one of the major talking points surrounding the appointment.
Kasi Viswanathan revealed that Dhoni suggested Zaheer’s name during the search for Fleming’s replacement.
“It was MS who suggested Zaheer, and the cricket management team, comprising Rupa and Ruturaj Gaikwad, agreed that he fits the role.”
According to the report, Dhoni had been given responsibility for helping identify Fleming’s successor.
He spoke to several candidates before holding final discussions with the franchise management after returning from the United States.
The eventual decision was to bring Zaheer into the CSK setup.
Zaheer’s IPL Experience Helped His Case
Zaheer Khan brings considerable IPL experience to the CSK coaching setup.
The former left-arm fast bowler worked with Mumbai Indians between 2018 and 2022, initially as Director of Cricket Operations and later as Global Head of Development.
He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants in 2024 as a mentor for one season.
That background was considered important by CSK as the franchise looked for someone familiar with the demands of the IPL.
Zaheer also has extensive experience working with young players and has been involved in player development after ending his playing career.
A World Cup Winner Joins CSK
Zaheer was an important member of India’s squad during the 2011 ODI World Cup, which India won on home soil.
He finished the tournament among the leading wicket-takers and shared the highest wicket tally in the competition.
His experience at the international level, combined with his work in the IPL, gives him a broad understanding of elite cricket.
As a player, Zaheer was known for his left-arm pace, variations and ability to adapt to different match situations.
His transition into coaching and player development has now led to one of the biggest leadership roles of his post-playing career.
Zaheer Khan Reacts to CSK Appointment
Zaheer expressed his excitement after being appointed CSK head coach.
“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL.”
He also recalled facing CSK during his playing career and spoke about the atmosphere at Chepauk.
“The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special.”
Zaheer added that he was looking forward to becoming part of the franchise’s long-standing legacy.
His appointment marks a new chapter for CSK after nearly two decades under Fleming.
Why CSK Chose Zaheer Khan
The franchise’s decision appears to be based on several factors.
1. IPL Experience
Zaheer has already worked in senior roles with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants.
2. Player Development
CSK specifically highlighted his ability to nurture young talent.
3. International Experience
His career with India includes the 2011 World Cup-winning campaign.
4. IPL-Only Focus
CSK wanted a coach who would focus on the IPL without commitments to other major global franchise leagues.
5. Compatibility With CSK Culture
The report says Zaheer’s calm and measured working style was considered suitable for CSK’s team environment.
Zaheer Will Pick His Support Staff
Zaheer has also been given the opportunity to select his coaching support staff.
According to Kasi Viswanathan, the new head coach requested time to finalise his team and CSK agreed.
Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to continue in their respective roles, while the franchise is still looking for an overseas coach for another position, with the batting-coach role mentioned as a possibility.
This means Zaheer will have considerable influence over the coaching structure heading into IPL 2027.
What Happens to MS Dhoni?
The future of MS Dhoni has once again attracted attention following the coaching change.
However, CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said that Dhoni is currently available as a player.
That means, based on the information in the supplied report, there is no announcement of Dhoni’s retirement from IPL cricket.
Dhoni’s continued presence would give Zaheer the opportunity to work alongside one of the most experienced figures in the history of the tournament.
CSK’s Recent Struggles
Zaheer’s immediate challenge will be significant.
The report states that CSK have failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons.
The franchise is therefore looking to make changes and rebuild its squad ahead of the next campaign.
Zaheer’s first major responsibility will be helping the franchise finalise its retentions ahead of the December mini-auction.
With CSK working within the existing player cycle before the next mega auction, the new coach will have to work with the current squad while attempting to improve the team’s results.
Retentions and Mini-Auction Become Immediate Priorities
One of Zaheer’s first assignments will be to assess the existing squad.
The franchise needs to determine which players should remain part of the core group and where changes are required.
The December mini-auction will provide CSK with an opportunity to strengthen areas of concern.
Zaheer’s experience in player development could become particularly important as the franchise looks to balance established players with younger talent.
Why the Coaching Search Was Difficult
The search for Fleming’s replacement was reportedly not straightforward.
The new coach would have only one year remaining in the current cycle before the next mega auction, meaning the incoming coach would have to work largely with an existing squad.
That reportedly made the role less attractive to some candidates.
CSK eventually found a candidate in Zaheer who already had experience in the IPL and understood franchise cricket.
The franchise also wanted someone without significant commitments to competing global leagues.
Zaheer Khan’s New Challenge at CSK
Taking charge of Chennai Super Kings represents a major challenge for Zaheer.
He now has to move from player development and mentorship into the central coaching role at one of the IPL’s most established franchises.
His responsibilities will include:
Squad planning
Player development
Retention decisions
Auction strategy
Coaching staff selection
Tactical preparation
Managing young players
Working alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad
Coordinating with the franchise’s cricket management team
The presence of Dhoni, who remains available as a player, could also add another experienced voice to the setup.
What This Means for CSK Ahead of IPL 2027
The appointment signals a new era for Chennai Super Kings.
Fleming’s 18-year tenure had been closely connected with the franchise’s identity, making his departure a significant change.
Zaheer now takes charge at a time when CSK are looking to recover from three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance.
The franchise will hope that his experience in player development, combined with his international and IPL background, can help establish a stronger squad.
His first major decisions around player retention and the upcoming mini-auction could provide an early indication of the direction CSK want to take.
